Stronger relationship

Personalized gifts give us the power to speak what’s in our minds and hearts. As such, the recipient of the gifts will exactly know your message and may make your bond stronger. These gifts will help you express your love, gratitude, and emotions in a unique and special way.

Personalized gifs are affordable

Of course, the price depends on the item and how they are personalized. Traditionally, many people believe that the more expensive the gifts are, the more valuable they are. You just have to be smart when ordering online, especially when looking for the right online shop.

A Brief History of Father’s Day

Did you know that Father’s Day originally started as a religious observance? It was a traditional Catholic holiday that celebrates fatherhood. History tells us that the special day can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Traditionally, the date was set on March 19 as it coincides with the Feast of St. Joseph. With the traditional background of Father’s Day, the modern version began in the United States in the early parts of the 20th century.

Its origin in the United States

Father’s Day is in fact inspired by the creation and celebration of Mother’s Day. As Anna Jarvis has successfully made Mother’s Day popular over the years. The objective of Father’s Day was to complement Mother’s Day by recognizing the father’s role in parenting. Both holidays had their first celebrations in West Virginia.

However, little did we know that the celebration was inspired by the tragedy of the Monongah mining disaster in 1907. This event killed 361 miners with 250 of them being fathers. However, the celebration did not become popular since it was not advertised outside Fairmont, West Virginia.

Establishment of Father’s Day

It was the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd that made Father’s Day popular. The reason for her determination was that she and her siblings were raised by a single father. She was inspired after hearing a sermon at the church about the efforts of Anna Jarvis in establishing Mother’s Day. She believed that fathers also deserve the same celebration.

Originally, the date was set every June 5, the birthday of her father. She then proposed it be moved to June 19, 1910, the 3rd Sunday of the month. Based on these events, several politicians attempted to formalize the holiday. It was then U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson who designated the celebration of Father’s Day with a presidential proclamation. It was made a national holiday in 1972 by President Richard M. Nixon.

Celebrating Father’s Day today

These days, families have their own ways of celebrating Father’s Day. Whether you are celebrating your father, spouse, step-father, brother, or role model, there are always cool ways to make the special day special and memorable. Here are some activities that you can do on Father’s Day:

The Life and Works of Vincent van Gogh

Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat poster

“Starry starry nights. Paint your palette blue and gray…” You have heard the song, and have hummed it. This song by Don McLean has immortalized one of the greatest artists in the history of Western art, Vincent van Gogh. Many of us have loved his works, yet not all are familiar with his story. Read on to learn more about life and some of the works of Vincent van Gogh.

Who is Vincent?

Vincent van Gogh was born on the 30th of March 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. His family was quite known as his father, Theodorus van Gogh was a country minister and Anna Cornelia Carbentus, his mother, was an artist who loved to draw and paint in watercolors different scenes of nature.

As a child, Vincent was serious and thoughtful. He had homeschooling and was taught by his mother and a governess. Later on, he was sent to the village school and eventually attended a boarding school at Zevenbergen where he felt alone and abandoned. His parents sent him to the middle school in Tilburg where his sadness got worse.

His interest in art started at a young age when he was encouraged to draw by his mother. Unfortunately, his sadness overshadowed the lessons, and later on, Vincent wrote that his youth was “austere and cold, and sterile”.

In 1873, Vincent went to the Groupil Gallery in London where he fell in love with the culture of the English. There he spent time visiting galleries and became a fan of the works of Charles Dickens and George Eliot.

He fell in love with Eugenie Loyer, the daughter of his landlady. However, his marriage proposal was rejected and as a result, Vincent suffered a breakdown. To compensate for this, he devoted his life to God and taught in a Methodist boys’ school.

His love for art

In 1880, van Gogh decided to move to Brussels and become an artist. During this time, his brother, Theo, offered to support him financially. He taught himself by reading and studying books.

It was in art that he maintained his emotional stability. It was in 1885 that he started to work on his first masterpiece, “Potato Eaters”. It was when he moved to Paris when Vincent first saw Impressionist art in which he was moved by the color and light. He then started studying with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Camille Pissarro, and others.

Vincent’s love life

Believe it or not, his love life is considered to be disastrous. He even fell in love with his cousin, Kate. But Kate was repulsed and fled to her home in Amsterdam. He then moved to The Hague and met Clasina Maria Hoornik, who later on became his companion, mistress, and model.

Unfortunately, he left Hoornik and The Hague as this was also the wish of his family. Vincent then lived a nomadic life in The Netherlands and focused on drawing and painting the landscape and its people.

Life as an artist

Vincent was also influenced by Japanese art and began studying eastern philosophy to further expand his knowledge and skills in art and life. He then went to France and moved into what we now know as “yellow house” where he spent most of his money on paint instead of food.

He completed more than 2100 works including 860 oil paintings and more than 1300 watercolors, drawings, and sketches. His painting “The Starry Night” was done in the asylum where he was staying in Sait-Remy, France in 1889. Inspired by this view, he wrote to his brother Theo and said, “This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big.”

Over 10 years, he created more than 43 self-portraits which are now displayed in museums around the world, such as in Washington, DC, Paris, New York, and Amsterdam.

He died on July 29, 1890, at the age of 37.

A Brief History Of The Advent Calendar

Christmas is just around the corner and it is time to bring out the decors from the storage. While checking the old decors, you also saw the old Advent calendar. This calendar has become a mainstay during the Christmas season. It helps us count down the days from December 1 to the 25th. Over the years, they have evolved in terms of appearance and inclusions. Instead of the traditional little doors that conceal pictures or Bible verses, they now have small gifts included. Read on to learn more about this fantastic Christmas decor and tradition. If you don’t have an Advent calendar yet, maybe it is time to buy or create one for your home.

The meaning of Advent

Advent is the four-week period beginning on a Sunday that is nearest the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle. The word “Advent” came from the Latin word for “coming”. Experts also believed that the celebration of Advent began as early as the 4th century. This was the period when people convert to Christianity and prepare themselves for baptism. These days, Advent is practiced as a count down to the birth of Christ on December 25.

The Advent calendar

In contrast with the real date of Advent, the Advent calendar begins on December 1 and marks the 24 days before Christmas. These days, the calendar includes paper doors that open to show an image, a verse in the Bible, or a piece of chocolate or even cheese. This practice dates back to the 19th century when German Protestants marked their doors or lit candles to count the days until Christmas day.

How it all began

The first printed Advent calendar can be traced back to the early 1900s and was created by Gerhard Lang. Around the same time, a German newspaper included in their publications an Advent calendar to serve as a gift to their readers. Gerhard Lang’s creation was inspired by the calendar that his mother created for him. This was modified by Lang and included tiny doors that are commonly seen in Advent calendars today. Unfortunately, production ceased because of the Second World War. The production was eventually continued by Richard Sellmer and he was considered to be the leading producer of Advent calendars. In the United States, Advent calendars were made popular by Dwight D. Eisenhower.

What are included in Advent calendars?

Traditionally, Advent calendars contain pieces of chocolates, a quote, or an image. However, you can be modern and include different items according to your taste. Over the years, the appearance of Advent calendars evolved. There was even a 4-foot, Christmas tree-shaped structure carved from burr elm and walnut wood in 2005. The world’s largest Advent calendar was created in 2007 at the St. Pancras train station in London. The calendar measured 232 feet and 11 inches tall, and 75 feet, and 5 inches wide.

What makes Advent calendars even more interesting is that the appearance can be versatile as possible. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can easily create a calendar that will make any home look great. Moreover, both kids and adults will surely adore Advent calendars as they can be personalized.

The Colors Of Christmas

Winter is here Christmas sock poster

In the Philippines, you will know that the Christmas season is coming when you are already hearing Christmas songs being played in malls, radio, or on television. Listening to those melodies will make you think of the presents that you have to prepare for your relatives, friends, and loved ones. Needless to say, the Christmas atmosphere can easily be felt with the colors seen around us. With green, red, gold, and silver surrounding us, the spirit of Christmas will surely make you hum your fave song!

Green

Green is the color of life and mystery. During winter, all of the other plants die, except for holly bushes and fir trees as they remain evergreen. These two plants survive even in the harsh conditions of the season. Romans during those times would weave holly wreaths and hang on their doors and wall. The wreaths signify the desire to see the rebirth of the sun and return of the summer. As such, green is associated with life. The color is also associated with nature and can give a refreshing and rejuvenating feeling.

Red

In contrast with the green, red represents blood and death. This is one of the reasons why people started adding red berries to their green holly wreaths. Aside from the attractive appearance of the wreaths, the colors represent the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In addition to these, red symbolizes Christ’s teachings of unconditional love. If you are also wondering why Santa wears red? It is the color of the robes of bishops as well as what St. Nicholas wore.

Gold

Gold is the color of the sun and light. It is also the color of extravagance, wealth, riches, and excess. It is also one of the presents brought by one of the three wise men to the infant Jesus. It is also the color of the star that the three wise men followed. In addition to these, gold represents the gift of eternal life as promised by Christ.

Blue

During medieval times, blue dye is more expensive than gold. This is the reason why blue-colored garments are used only by royal families and wealthy families. This color is also associated with Mother Mary and why many images and statues of her have the color on her robe. This is also considered as one of the cool colors that create a relaxing and calming vibe to the interior.

White

White is the color of purity. This is why the color is associated with Jesus Christ. He brought light in the dark and saved us from our sins. He is spotless, sinless, and pure. White is also important to churches during Christmas around the globe.

Purple

Purple is the main color of the Advent season. It represents fasting and repentance and the altars of churches around the globe are covered with purple cloth. It is also the color of royalty and the first candle of the Advent Wreath is purple.

Pink

This color is used during the third Sunday of Advent. It represents love and joy and the shift from repentance to joyous celebration.
